And as more companies look to outsource this function to get better results, a few questions arise: What’s the difference between a recruitment process outsourcing (RPO) provider and a staffing agency? Why do organizations choose RPOs over staffing agencies and vice versa? A major difference between the two is the level of engagement and commitment they provide organizations. The Dark Side of Bright Colours Depending on the internal ethics or culture of a particular workplace, these same bright colours can also be used to intentionally enhance uncomfortable feelings within employees. For example, having a break or tea room painted with very bright, stimulating colours can decrease the time staff eat or rest due this space not being conducive to relaxation. Soothing Blues and Greens Researchers have consistently found that light blue and green tones are the colours most frequently identified as being calming, soothing, and relaxing. Some posit that this preference is an evolutionary bias linked to positive experiences of nature but this theory is yet to be proven scientifically. The use of blue and green in the workplace can help alleviate stress and anxiety and     counteract the effect of staring at a brightly lit computer monitor for extended periods of time. This thoughtful use of office workplace colour psychology equates to less fatigue and more productivity. Grey and Beige While neither stimulating nor relaxing, most people surveyed report increased feelings of depression and sadness when working in environments painted grey or beige. These colours should definitely be avoided if happy, energised workers are important to one’s business. Freedom of Choice While much is known about the psychology of colour, it is a widely acknowledged that employees able to decorate their own workspaces have higher job satisfaction levels than those who are denied this freedom. People have their own personal tastes and preferences that often will override a generic one-size-fits-all approach. The use of colour in the workplace has an undeniable influence upon the mood and psychology of employees and harnessing these facts can give a business an extra edge in increasing productivity. Life Balance NOW!

Workaholic Find Your Work/Life Balance… NOW! Workaholic? Find Your Work/Life Balance… NOW! Workaholic… yes, I am one. And I’ll say it: My name is Dawn and I am a workaholic. Just ask my husband.   He comes home after work and is occasionally surprised to see me off the computer by 6:30-7:00pm, and wonders what’s wrong since that is so early. Betsy the cat telling me to stop working for the day. Or ask my cat (really, it’s true). By 7pm, she is sitting inches away at my face, staring at me as I type away, meowing every 30 seconds. I suppose it’s her way of saying, “Enough. Shut it down.” Other than my human and feline time clocks, it’s easy to fall prey to being a workaholic. There’s always one more project to get done, or one more reason to keep plowing ahead so there’s not as much of a traffic jam the next day. But enough is enough. My waistline was spreading (not a comfortable fact to admit), and in December 2013, I decided that something needed to be done. I started going to a trainer, and FORCING myself to push away from my desk to quit being sedentary. Ultimately, any kind of work/life balance comes to a narrow decision point… are you willing to commit to making a change? Do you want to control work, or are you going to let it control you? I mentioned my decision via Twitter, and several people responded asking me to write a blog post about how to come up with this balance. And again, I point to the decision. We allow ourselves to be sucked into the endless machinery of human productivity. There’s nothing wrong with that, but the heart of the matter is that productivity marches on, regardless of whether we are there or not. And that’s the part I realized. Sure, there’s always going to be one more project to do. Another client who has emailed after hours and is waiting for a response.  Another phone call to make. But the decision to be a workaholic is truly that: a decision. Or we can decide not to be a workaholic, and start making changes that gives us space to have fun, live life, share family time, or do something for ourselves. So checking email constantly doesn’t do anything except rob us of our attention that would be otherwise directed elsewhere. Or answering phone calls during dinner time with the family only steals away our sense of family. Or staying late after work or thinking, “Just one more project… and I’ll be ahead for tomorrow” can slowly steal us from our health because we’ve sat on our butts for 10 hours a day. It’s a choice. Being a workaholic is not a job. It’s a choice. And as someone once told me, “In 5-10 years, is anyone really going to care that you were such a workaholic?” Good question. Puts things into perspective, doesnt it? [Side note: Since I started focusing on having a work-life balance, Ive lost 22 pounds and feel much more vitalized!]

Becca: Creative business owners tend to fall into the category of multi-potentialites, scanners, and shiny-object chasers. We have TONS of new ideas and are always creating new stuff often stuff that is unrelated to our other stuff. So what happens is that we find it hard to settle on just one thing or one group of clients, and as a result, we end up being super wishy-washy, and trying to help EVERYONE, which means that the people who really need us get lost in the mix and never find us which sucks for us and them! Ellen: That’s exactly it. Every creative business person I’ve ever known healers, coaches, writers, teachers   has initially wanted to help everyone. And it’s too much.  No one person or business can really help everyone. It’s too much. And by not focusing your efforts you’re missing tons of wonderful clients because you’re not speaking clearly enough to them. Stop trying to help everyone and start thinking about which particular groups of people you want to help. What’s THE most important thing to do to grow your business quickly? Ellen: The key to growing your business quickly is to become known for a specific, tangible thing.  Something that people can easily remember and understand when it’s time to go to that person for help.  Saying you’re a Life Coach is well and good, but it’s unlikely that your friends are going to know who to recommend to you, because at the end of the day Life Coach is a pretty ambiguous title.  Now, if you get really specific about a problem that you use your life coaching skills to solve, it suddenly starts making things a lot easier for you.  So if you become a coach that helps people deal with breakups from long term boyfriends, or the a coach that works with first generation latinas to help them gain career advancement, those are super specific things and people know who to send to you, and potential clients know very clearly when you are talking to them. The most important thing is to position yourself and develop your expertise around solving real world problems that other people seek out. Becca: Yep, what Ellen said! And remember that the specific tangible thing needs to be something you’re super deeply connected to. If you choose it at random, you’ll be onto the next thing before you even have your first client. You need to be mega emotionally connected to what you’re doing, so instead of picking a niche or an area of expertise at random, pick something that matters to you! What do C.B.Owners need to think about before they do another thing? ((what problems they solve)) Becca: Before you do anything else, think about what problems you solve in your business and make them real and tangible. It’s so easy to get caught up in creating our businesses, that we forget about what we’re actually doing (sounds crazy, but it’s true). Before you do anything else, write down what top 3 problems you solve for your clients and slap them somewhere that you will see them every single day. When you can stay connected to how you actually help people, everything in your business stays way more focused, so you’re not chasing every new idea that you have! Ellen:  After you’ve done that,  think about who you want to help or work with.  Make sure the the problems you solve are real in their lives. Creative business owners tend to be great, amazing compassionate helpers.  You can’t help everyone, so think about who you want to help.  Make sure to map your expertise and offerings to groups of people you really want to work with. The tighter you can connect those two things, the easier it is to be known for what you do, and for your business to go through the roof.
